What should you know about traumatic brain injuries?

On Behalf of | Nov 23, 2024 | Personal Injury

Many injuries are possible during a motor vehicle crash. One of these is a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which can be a catastrophic, life-changing injury. Concussions are a form of a minor TBI, but some injuries are much more serious.

There are many factors about these brain injuries that you must consider if you’re involved in a car crash. Because a TBI can be life-threatening in some cases, it’s critical to receive medical care if there’s a chance you have one.

TBIs can appear long after the crash

Most injuries that you might have because of a car wreck will be evident at the scene of the crash or shortly after. TBIs are a bit different. These injuries may show up quickly, but they can also remain hidden for days or weeks after they occur.

Because TBIs are sometimes sneaky, you should get medical care if you have any signs that are commonly associated with this type of injury. These include headaches, sensitivity to light or sound, confusion, difficulty communicating, or loss of consciousness.

No direct hit is necessary

While many people think a direct hit to the head is necessary for a TBI, that’s not the case. A TBI can occur if the head is flung around, which is possible because of the impact of the crash. The brain slams into the skull, which can cause significant damage to the brain and supporting tissues.

Medical care for a TBI can be extensive and costly, particularly if the injury is severe. Victims who are injured due to the negligence of another driver may opt to pursue a claim for compensation to cover those costs and other related financial damages.
